Gathering the Bets

Gathering the Bets

Gathering the Bets at the Green Corn. The Ceremonial and camping grounds are divided between the North (Wolf Clan) and the south (Deer Clan). Early in the morning of the Second Day, two young men, one from each clan, go around to each camp to collect the Peach Seed Bets. They collect a wager which can be a shirt or a shawl, or anything a person chooses to wager. The young men must pick up a like wager from the other side so that at the end of the game, the players of the winning side will receive two shirts, or two shawls, etc. the bets are then wrapped in a sheet and hung from the rafters of the long house until the game has been won. This day also marks the beginning of the Peach Seed Game.
